August 5, 2010 Hello. The old North Waterloo website (www.scouts-nw.com) was replaced last summer with nw.scouter.ca (that's correct, there's no “www” in the address). To help people find the new site, the old site was redirected to the new one. That meant you could enter the old site address and you would automatically be taken to our new site. This automatic redirection will be discontinued in a couple of weeks, so if you have not already done so, please bookmark our new site: nw.scouter.ca so you can keep up to date on Scouting in North Waterloo. Thank you
July 4, 2010 Hello. Wednesday July 7th and Wednesday July 14th are our Scouters' Nights at Cub Camp at Camp Everton! All Scouters are invited to join us for our Campfire, to be held at the Bill Evans Campfire Circle. Arrive at 7:30 for a great campfire and if you're good there might be a Leaders' mug up for you back at the Cub Barn after the campfire. Come on out and see what we are doing at Camp! Hope to see you there. Bring along your bug spray, campfire blankets and singing voices! Sarah Kassa
Our Group (Guelph 31st) has 12 muskets I made from scratch for Fort George. Each is in it's own bag. There is no interest in going to Fort George anymore and we have lost our storage space so we would like to sell them. They are good quality. I'd like to get $50 each for them - saves you a lot of work and money. They may need new elastics for the firing mechanism. Let me know if you are interested. I'm gone for two weeks so I will get back to you after that if you reply before then. Ron

May 31, 2010 Hello. The following invitation was sent to the North Waterloo Scouters' Club (Troop), and they would like to invite Leaders from ALL Sections to the Spring Thaw Potluck BBQ on Friday June 4th at Camp Mohawk so we can all get together for a social event! Greetings all, This is a reminder that our last North Waterloo Scouters' Club event for the 2009/2010 Scouting year will be the annual Spring Thaw Potluck BBQ this coming Friday June 4th at Camp Mohawk. The gate will be open at 5:30 and you are welcome to join us for food and fellowship anytime after that. Please bring something tasty to share as part of our potluck dinner. Coleman stoves and a campfire will be available for heating/cooking. Drinks will be provided. The dinner portion of the event will continue until about 7:00 (or until the food runs out!), after which we can sit around the campfire for as long as you like. In my capacity as ADAC for Program at the Troop level, I'd be happy to hear your ideas about how we can improve Scouting in North Waterloo next year, or just reminisce about the great times we all had this year; it is up to you. If I don't see you on Friday, please accept my best wishes for safe and happy camping this summer, and I look forward to seeing you at the end of August for the launch of the 2010/2011 Scouting year.

May 28, 2010 Hello. The following is an update on the Speed River Challenge from the Wellington e-mail list ... The flyer has been posted on the blog for a while now (http://blog.scouter.ca/2010/05/20/speed-river-challenge-raft-race-2010/) though it's been suggested that there should be a prize worthy of the name :-)! Well, we finally have them. What's been donated is 2 Coleman stoves. The winning Troop will receive a 2 burner propane stove (worth about $85), and the winning Company a propane stove with built-in grill (worth about $125). So if you're looking at upgrading the cuisine at your next camp (or have cuisine that's actually cooked), this is worth the effort! You do of course get that wonderful trophy as well. All kidding aside, as we're the lead-off event for the Multi-Cultural Festival this year, we really do need your entry. If you have a couple of hours on Saturday morning June 12th, come-on out, get wet, and try for a winner! Humour me, an inner tube or air mattress are NOT a raft!! Hope to see you there! Please register with Gerry as noted on the flyer. All welcome! Please pass this on to your Troop & Company, no matter how busy you think they are… Yours in Scouting,
Conrad Knabenschuh - Wellington Area Commissioner

April 9, 2010 To all groups & sections! The Region of Waterloo EMS Medical Venturers and Rovers need your help! In exchange we can promise a good time and a great linking opportunity! On the last Wednesday of each month we conduct an evening of training scenarios. During this time we practice our First Aid skills on volunteer patients, who are made up to look like they're having a real incident! In the past we've put people made up to look like they have cuts, bruises, heart attacks, strokes, serious burns, spinal injuries, broken bones, anaphylactic shock and just about everything else we might see at a camp. These scenarios often include make-up and fake blood so it helps the patient play the part. We also educate each patient on how to behave as a patient so they are exhibiting realistic symptoms for our responders. Don't worry though, we would never put anyone in a scenario or position they are not comfortable with! The patient always has the ability to stop the scenario if they become uncomfortable with what is happening. You don't need to bring anything special with you. We may ask some of your members to wear a shirt or pants they don't mind throwing away afterwards as we have to cut them, or they get fake blood on them. However, almost everyone has old clothes in their drawers! We are looking for groups who might be interested in this linking opportunity! We would love to have groups of all levels join us at some point, as working with Beavers has a different set of challenges over working with the older sections (although I'm not sure which is more challenging ;-). We would even welcome a group of adults (group committees, leaders from a group, etc)! We are hoping to have lots of groups step forward and help! We meet from 7pm-9pm at EMS HQ on Maple Grove Road (beside Police HQ & the safety village). Again it's the last Wednesday of each month these events happen. If you're group is interested in joining us please let me know. Although there's only a few opportunities left this Scouting year, this will continue in September and I will contact you then. You can respond to me at the email address below, or through our 'Contact Us' page found on our website at www.WaterlooMedVents.com Yours in Scouting

TALL SHIP COMPOSITE CAMP Only 16 Berths are available so sign up early. For more information check out the CEC site: http://cec.scouter.ca/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=99&Itemid=155 *A brigantine is a two-masted square-rigged sailing vessel with fore-and-aft rigged sails on the mainmast. This is distinct from a brig that has square sails on both masts. The name comes from the Italian word brigantino meaning a pirate ship. The reason for the association was that this type of rig was popular with the brigands or freebooters of the Atlantic.

Scouters: The Scout House Working Group has surveyed North Waterloo Area Scouters. They have built an action plan to support our Scout House. It's a plan that meets the requests of the survey respondents in the way that the Scouters of NWA want to respond to the needs of Scout House. In other words, collectively, the Scouters of NWA have chosen this action plan. Now it's time to gather. There will be a Town Hall Meeting at Scout House on Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010 at 7:30 pm. It would be good if you can attend or at least a member of your Group Committee. As well, Section leaders are welcome. All Scouters in NWA are part of this plan. There should be at least a couple members from each Group there.
The Town Hall Meeting will include: The Scout House Working Group believes the meeting will end by 9:00 including the question period.

February 11, 2010 Hello Scouters and Advisors. February 19th-21st North Waterloo Area's will be running a Winter tenting camp for senior Scouts, Venturers, and Rovers. The camp is self contained and costs $10 each, which includes site fee per person, and firewood for your campsite, this fee is to be paid when arriving at camp. The only events that will be running are a snowball fighting arena, best snowman, and Saturday night a camp wide campfire, and if any groups are interested, the challenge of building a sled at camp. This event is different, as its more of a getting to know the other youth in your area camp, as compared to a weekend full of challenges and events that run in between every meal. Remember to bring your toboggans and GT's. If venturers come by themselves without leaders, they must have written permission from their Group Commissioner, and their Advisor. The same weekend at camp, the ADAC , for troop, Scouter Rob will be running a hike throughout Everton, taking the path less traveled. The theme of the hike will be "Off the Beaten Track: Exploring the Natural History of Camp Everton." The hike will be led by a professor of paleo-ecology who is also an amateur naturalist with years of experience introducing Scouting youth to the wonders of nature at Camp Everton. Checklists will be provided to any Scouts wishing to work on badges with nature identification requirements (e.g. naturalist, World Conservation, Chief Scout Award). We will be exploring the rarely seen corners of Camp Everton, so be prepared for off-trail hiking and dress appropriately to the weather. Bring your own lunch and water bottles. You will have time during the lunch break to fire up your one-burner stoves and heat up some soup or hot drinks if you wish. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me for more information.

January 31, 2010 Hello. Regarding the drop off location in the following message, North Waterloo Area will use the Scout House on the days that the Scout Shop is open (this Thursday, Friday and Saturday) and put the articles in the room to the right as you enter the building. Thank you Scout groups in CEC are being asked to assist a local Rotary Club, to provide needed supplies to Haiti. Through contacts in Haiti and Dominican Republic, a wish list of supplies has been generated. Although there are many items on the list, it is logical that our groups might have some of the following: tents, tarps, and sleeping bags. We've been told any tent (even those that may appear torn/ripped) will be used as what the folks there are using now is pieces of cloth/cardboard and whatever else they can find. The rainy season is coming and they need help.” Martin (Randy) MacPherson has volunteered to spearhead this initiative for CEC. We have asked each Area Commissioner to find an Area Delivery Point. We will arrange for pick up from the Area Delivery Point on February 7. We have been in contact with Mary Jane, and the cut-off date for delivery of donations to Mary Jane is now February 9, so that gives us a 48-hour leeway to have everything moved to Oakville. We anticipate a significant response, and will therefore not be able to pick-up from individual homes. Before you drop off your donation, contact your Area Commissioner for the location of the Area Delivery Point, then contact Randy at 519-843-6310 (there is voice mail if we aren't home), or at randy@scouter.ca , with the following information: name, Group & Area, a return phone number, what and where is being donated, and when it will be delivered to the appropriate Area delivery point. Randy will return each call to confirm that we have a record of what we are picking up from each location, so that record keeping will be easier for Mary Jane. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter. This is a wonderful opportunity to be directly involved in the rescue/recovery process. Original Information: A Guider and Rotarian, Mary Jane Howie, is spearheading a drive to collect supplies for Haiti. She states, “Many interested parties in Oakville are getting together container(s) to ship to Haiti. We have contacts there through Rotary who will meet the container(s) in the Dominican Republic, clear the container(s) through customs and transport the goods across the mountains to various locals in Haiti. The costs will be handled through various Rotary Clubs and businesses. Debbie MacPherson, Area Commissioner, Greater Halton. November 29, 2009 Hello Everyone The 2010 Kub Car Rally is almost here!!!! You are receiving this e-mail because your were my Group Contact from Last Scouting Year. In case you are no longer affiliated with your last years group, please let me know and I will remove you from my list. If you know who has taken over, please let me know so that I may contact them. Well . . . the North Waterloo Rover Guild is once again proud to organize the Kub Car rally for ALL Cubs in our Area. This year we have been able to get back into Conestoga Mall now that their renovations have nearly finished. The dates for the races are as follows: Preliminaries - Monday January 25, 2010 through to Wednesday January 27, 2010 Finals - Friday February 19, 2010 and Saturday February 20, 2010 All Races will be in the Center Court at Conestoga Mall. You will notice that this year we are holding the preliminary races on 3 nights rather than the customary 4 nights. In the recent past we have noticed a decline in the number of youth attending and thus we have seen a sparse turnout for the Thursday night time slot. In addition, many of our Rover volunteers are in a recreational Curling league that evening. Therefore there will be no races on the Thursday Evening. In order to confirm your space at the Preliminaries, please send me the following information:
Group Name: You will be contacted in the new year confirming your EXACT time for racing. If you have any questions about this event, please feel free to e-mail or phone me at your convenience. Jim - jim@gerrards.ca

November 18, 2009 Hello fellow Scouters and Supporters of Scouts Canada: I'm supporting an idea in the Aviva Community Fund, a competition that could result in positive change in communities across Canada. If the idea I'm supporting receives enough votes, it will have a chance at sharing in $500,000 of funding. I would really appreciate your help in pushing this idea to the finals. I think No One Left Behind is the kind of program deserving of this level of support. Please take a few minutes to visit the site and to vote for No One Left Behind. And tell everyone you know to vote as well. Please vote for it at http://www.avivacommunityfund.org/ideas/acf4082 Thanks in advance.
John Rietveld PS: We've only just announced this at 2 PM Monday and we have 20 votes in the first hour.

October 30, 2009 Hello. The following message is from Peter Sundborg, the Executive Director of Central Escarpment Council. The attachments mentioned in his message are on the North Waterloo website on the Forms & Documents page: http://nw.scouter.ca/forms.htm Good Day All, I am sending you the above attachments as resources that Scouts Canada has developed and that we at the Council, Area, Group and Section can utilize should a situation be brought to our attention involving the H1N1 Virus. We have had two recent situations where a parent from one group and a leader from another reported youth who had become ill while on a Scouting event. These youth showed some of the symptoms of the H1N1 Virus. When a Scouting member or Council office is made aware of these incidents it is important for us to be proactive and to notify the other members of the section or group of the situation. Attached you will find a letter that can be customized for the section or group to use to send to the parents via email or as a handout. Also attached is a handout for parents and one for leaders; please share these with the leaders and parents of the groups and sections. In continuing to act proactively, should a number of youth become ill from a section please consider postponing future program meetings until everyone has recovered. It is also important to listen for local Public Health advisories; these advisories could impact Scouting's ability to hold section meetings for a period of time. Council Commissioners, could I please ask you to forward this information onto your Area Commissioners and then onto the Group Commissioners so that they can be informed and ready should a situation arise in their group. For the most up to date information from Scouts Canada please go to the Scouts Canada website at http://www.scouts.ca/ and click on fightflu.ca. Thank you for your attention to this important matter. Peter

Dutch Oven Basics You asked - we delivered! Scouters one and all. You have been asking for it, and now you will get it. Mark Saturday, November 7th on your calendar for the first CEC Outdoor Skills workshop. This is the first in a 3-seasons a year series of workshops being provided for all leaders. These workshops will occur each fall, winter, and spring. Each workshop will contain sessions specific to the season as well as sessions of general interest that span all seasons. As well, there will be sessions aimed at a range of experience from the brand new recruit up to the hard-core survivalist. The general format will be to have a set of sessions available during the day and you pick those sessions that will fill your specific needs or interests. Want to mix dutch oven cooking with knots? We do that. How about basic campsite skills with a GPS session (so you can find your campsite)? We can do that too . Whatever your needs, we anticipate that you will find something of interest.
This falls sessions include: The November workshop will be held at Blue Springs Scout Reserve for a minimal cost of $6. You will be picking three sessions from the available list. To keep the cost down you will be asked to pack your own lunch. Opening will be at 8:30 outside Ridley Lodge and the sessions will run until 4:00.
To assist in scheduling the sessions we ask that you pre-register by November 1st by emailing me ( cec_outdoors@scouts.ca

Dear Scouters,
Great News. . .
Pierre Laurin from our National Office has managed to reach an agreement with the GO Stations (Metrolinx) - with conditions that will allow us to fundraise on Apple Day at GO Stations.
At the locations noted on the Certificate of Insurance (please print a copy and have available in case you are asked for it or challenged), our members will be allowed on the sidewalks - however we are not allowed on the platform, in parking lots or on the roadway of the GO Stations. They have also removed the requirement for a parental permission form.

Hello.
The following message is from Stephen Kent, the Chief Commissioner and Chair of the Board of Governors of Scouts Canada. Please contact Stephen directly if you have any comments / questions. His contact information is at the bottom of this e-mail. (Note: Item 1 has already been completed).
=================================
Hi everyone
I hope you're having a great summer!
Two items for your review and consideration....
1. Most Councils have not yet submitted the names of their voting delegates for this year's AGM. Please do so as soon as possible, as the Nominating Committee will soon have information to circulate. Please submit your Council's names and contact information to Cheryl Dinelle at the National Office.
2. To further encourage and increase democratic participation, and to address WOSM's call for greater democratic involvement, the Chief Commissioner's Task Force on Growth is recommending the:
I will be leading these investigations, and I am asking for your input. >From my perspective, Policy 1014 has not fully addressed the democratic deficit concerns in our organization. I want to identify specific ways that we can be a more democratic organization and improve member participation in decision making processes. For me, it's all about openness and transparency. Perhaps there is no ideal solution, but I am committed to improving how we do business.
I will be presenting a preliminary report to the Board of Governors at our September meeting, and I will also be asking for assistance from the Board's Policy and Governance Committee in carrying out these investigations.
Please send me your specific recommendations and ideas on how we can improve our voting and election practices, as well as your thoughts on opportunities for greater member participation and increased communication and dialogue.
Also, please feel free to widely circulate this request. I would appreciate receiving input by the end of August. I realize that we're in the middle of summer, but I do want to get the ball rolling. This process will continue early in the fall, but as I said, I plan to update the Board on progress when we meet in September.
On a related note, the Task Force on Growth is also committed to established a more open appointments process. Our CEO, Rob Stewart, will be communicating with Council Commissioners on this issue in the near future.
Thanks a lot. Please keep in touch. All the best!
Steve

Fellow Scouters,
Multicultural Festival Saturday June 20th and Sunday June 21st
We have a place at the multicultural festival for our Scouting information booth and display. I would like to get some help with this. We also need to have help with the colour party for the Official Ceremonies.
At the official ceremonies we lead the procession of dignitaries to the stage. The past several years we have built a pyramidal structure from spars and decked it out with flags. Anyone wanting to help should come in full uniform. They should attend at the scout display at Victoria Park arriving by 2:30. We will then move to the Clock Tower. Anyone arriving after 2:30 should go directly to the Clock Tower to be there by 2:45 p.m. The ceremonies begin at 3:00 and take about 45 minutes. Scouts who help with this can use this as a community service project.
I also need help with the display and handing out information. Both youth and adults are welcome to help. You do not have to stay all day, Just let me know the hours that you can manage and I will slot you in. We will have a marshmallow roast and perhaps some other activities. If you have any ideas please let me know. Scouts who help with this can use this as a community service project.
We will start at 9:00 a. m. on Saturday and go until about 6:00 p.m. and on Sunday we will start at 9:30 and go until about 5:00 p.m.
This is an opportunity to promote Scouting in our community. Please let me know as soon as possible if you can help out.

Hello.
The following information is from Scouts Canada:
On Wednesday May 6th 2009, MMS will be updated to enable early registrations for the upcoming 2009-2010 Scouting Year. Because of this, MMS may be shut down for short periods of time that morning from approximately 8:00 am. An announcement will be sent out when the system is back up.
After the May 6th update, the registration process in MMS will be very similar but registrars will be able to choose the appropriate registration year (i.e. this year or next year). If a member has been registered in the wrong year, corrections can only be made by MMS support at the National Office (mms@scouts.ca
Note: As in previous years, org unit administrators should set the Maximum Volunteers (Next Session) and Maximum Youth (Next Session) before May 6th. This is done in the Org Profile (Admin) page in MMS. In the event that these fields are not set, we will set maximum youth and maximum volunteer next session fields to 40.
Sincerely,

Hello.
Our Pack (21st Waterloo) is headed to Ottawa on My 15 for three nights. We leave first thing in the morning on Friday May 15th (Cubs will miss a day of school) and return Monday May 18th around 7pm.
We will be travelling by coach bus and will be staying at the Ottawa Jail Hostel in old jail cells converted to dorm rooms. Our meals will be either at the hostel, one dinner at the food court at the Rideau Center, a fajita meal at the Lone Star Cafe, and then dinner at a service center on the way home.
We will be visiting and touring the Mint, Museum of Science and Technology, War Museum, Aviation Museum, and the Parliament Buildings. We will also be taking in the fireworks at Dow's Lake on the Saturday night. We will also be doing a driving tour of the PM's house and Rideau Hall, the Governor General's house.
As it stands, we have approximately 10 spaces available for our trip. The cost per person for everything except the food court on the first night and the truck stop on the way home is $275. If a Cub from a particular pack wants to go, we will need a leader from that pack also to go. In reality, this likely means a leader and their own child.
Please respond by Apr 24 if interested. Contact Mike Onotsky at mike@onotsky.net
Thank you
